In a nutshell, there are four numbers, 4, 6, 8, and 10 and each of them has its own spot on the table. In order to roll a hardway combination, you must roll the exact pair of doubles. Once the player has made a hardway bet and a point is established, they win if a hard number is rolled before an easy one or a 7. A gambling game played with two dice in which a first throw of 7 or 11 wins, a first throw of 2, 3, or 12 loses the bet, and a first throw of any.

Dice (commonly known as craps), is a game often played for money where the player (referred to as the shooter) rolls 2 dice hoping to roll a winning combination. The number 8 can be obtained 3 ways. The 'easy way' by rolling a 6 and 2 or a 3 and 5, or the 'hard way' by rolling a 4 and 4. 'Hard' numbers are any 2 pair combinations: 2 and 2, 3 and 3, 4 and 4, 5 and 5, and 6 and 6. Betting on the 'hard' number combination results in a larger return when it is thrown.

Hard Eight Craps Payout

If you ever play craps you will hear people throwing their money to the stickman, the guy in the center of the craps table with the stick. Among other bets they will scream, some of them are called hardway bets. You will hear, “Gimme a Hard Eight.” “Give me a Hard Six.”

The bets are hard ones at many levels. Consider this:

The hardways are called hardways because of the odds being against them. It is less likely that the hardway number will roll as a pair as opposed to the “soft” way for the number. An for example of this is if you have the Hard 6 bet (3-3) , the 6 comes up as a roll of 4 2 or 5 1. You would lose the hardway bet but win if you bet the six.

The Hardway Bets are always active bets even in the event of a Come Out roll. I won’t explain the Come Out roll in this article, for more information please check out my book. The Bet may be placed, changed or removed at any time before any roll.

Payoffs for the Four Different Hardway Bets are as Follows:
Bet Win On Lose On Win Pays No Action On
4 Hard 4 7 or Easy 4 8 for 1 (7:1) 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
6 Hard 6 7 or Easy 6 10 for 1 (9:1) 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
8 Hard 8 7 or Easy 8 10 for 1 (9:1) 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12
10 Hard 10 7 or Easy 10 8 for 1 (7:1) 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12

Most of the time you will either seven out (the shooter throws a seven) or the number will come as an easy roll.

People will profess to be dice setters and that they can set the dice a certain way to statistically influence the chances of rolling a hard number. It certainly sounds alluring but consider that the casinos know about cheating and do all they can to prevent the dice from being influenced. Each roll is a brand new roll and does not reflect influence of a previous roll, unless there is cheating.

Can somebody throw three Hard Sixes in a roll? They not only can, you sometimes will see that at a craps table if you are playing at it too long. Statistically nothing changes on each roll of the dice and you may find a shooter who seems to “draw” the hard six, meaning everytime he gets the dice he throws a Hard Six.

The question is do you want to test your theory with hard cash? If so, make sure you see how many times this person does, for the short period of time, throw the Hard Six. Don’t expect him (or her) to throw it every session they have the dice. In fact, in the short run, the time you are watching the shooter, anything can happen and it will not skew the law of averages over the long run. I’ll bet that the shooter doesn’t throw hardways any more or less than the next person.

Some people use hardway bets as a hedge to help offset Don’t Pass/Come bets or Lay bets. They are a costly hedge and in the long run it is better to stay away from them unless you have a large bankroll to experiment with.

If you are interested in craps, I have a book out, Practical Craps, and you can order it from the link listed below.

Just remember in general that craps is a “hard way” to make money and even think about being profitable.
